at the Wisconsin Sheriff's and
Deputy Sheriff's Association Conference
02/07/2012
BRIEF OUTLINE OF INCIDENT:
On the above date, Deputy Williams responded to a City of La
Crosse call of a subject in the river. Once on scene, Williams
grabbed his squad PFD, removed his duty belt and entered the
water to rescue the subject. At this time it was noted that the
subject was struggling to stay above water and was being swept
downstream by the strong current. Williams was able to get a
hold of the subject and kept him above water until they were
picked up by a civilian boat.
DISPOSITION/RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Had it not been for Deputy Williams’ quick action, it is very
possible that the subject would have drowned prior to a rescue
boat reaching him. His willingness to put his own life at risk
to rescue another shows a rare brand of courage. He is to be
congratulated for his efforts.
