Wisconsin Wins                        T.A.T.U.        Fight Against Corporate Tobacco

Youth Tobacco Prevention

The La Crosse County Health Department (LCHD) strives to reduce tobacco use among youth in La Crosse County through education, thus significantly improving the health of La Crosse County Residents.

T.A.T.U. - Teens Against Tobacco Use is a peer education program developed by the American Lung Association for middle and high school students.  Students are trained in fun and interactive methods about the harmful effects of tobacco use.  The trained students share their knowledge through tobacco free lifestyle presentations to peers and elementary youth.

2006-2007 School Year

Longfellow/SOTA II Middle School: Students wrote and received a CESA 4 mini-grant in the amount of $825.  Funds were used to train with the Supporting Players Acting Troupe.  Fifteen T.A.T.U members learned to effectively implement skits and live performances that are entertaining as well as educational.  Students performed at 15 events educating over 500 adults, teens and elementary students.

Onalaska Luther High School:  25 members of the WINGS program participated in T.A.T.U training during the Spring.  The students then visited 5 schools with a tobacco prevention message.

Logan Sr. High School:  T.A.T.U members shared a powerful presentation with all health education classes.  Students learned how to resist the latest tactics Big Tobacco is using to lure the young people into the deadly habit.

Franklyn Elementary:  Tigers Against Tobacco Use, 4th and 5th grade students presented puppet shows to younger students as well as created a display for area veterinarians teaching the effects of second hand smoke on their pets.
