2009 Collaboration Conference
Solutions for Challenging Trends
This year's conference
started with a presentation of various statistics including population,
school enrollment, tax rate disparities, concentrations of poverty, and
investment in infrastructure, which are starting to show some disturbing
trends. Our development pattern indicates that we are encouraging sprawl
and leaving our core to deteriorate – which is beginning to have
negative impacts on the entire region. We then looked at a variety of
potential solutions that could work to reverse these trends. We
explored options from leveling out tax rates by cutting back on
governmental services, to regional economic development and revenue
sharing, to a higher education access program that has proven to have
significant economic development implications in other communities.
