LA CROSSE COUNTY VETERANS SERVICE COMMISSION

The Veterans Service Commission is a service body mandated by State Statue to exist in each Wisconsin County. The purpose of the Commission is to provide emergency assistance to needy veterans and to the family members of deceased veterans who reside in La Crosse County.

Verification of at least 6 months residency and a copy of the veterans DD214 (military discharge paper) are required.

The Veterans Service Commission holds its monthly meetings at 4:00 p.m. on the first Monday evening of each month. If the first Monday is a holiday, the meeting is held on the following Tuesday.

Applications for Commission grants are obtained from and returned to the Veterans Service Officer, who is Executive Secretary for the Commission, no later than 4:00 p.m. on the Friday before the Commission Meeting.

The amount of assistance, and whether or not assistance is granted, is at the sole discretion of the La Crosse County Veterans Service Commission. Generally, grants are restricted to three per calendar year for one individual.

The Commission may provide assistance in the form of emergency vouchers for food, heating fuel, medical services, or medications; payments for utility expenses or housing expense go directly to the provider; and bus fare to and from VA facilities will be paid only to the transportation company.

The Veterans Service Officer, acting in his capacity as Executive Secretary for the Commission, is delegated the authority to make grants in the amount of $100 or less. All such transactions must be documented, submitted and reviewed at the next regularly scheduled Commission meeting.
