What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) is the use of treatments to develop, improve, sustain, or restore daily living skills to any person who has an injury, illness, disability or psychological dysfunction, by using everyday activities (occupations). Occupational therapy interventions focus on adapting the environment, modifying the task, teaching the skill, and educating the client/family in order to increase participation in and performance of daily activities, particularly those that are meaningful to the client. OT provides a client-centered practice that places a premium on the progress towards the client's goals.

The ultimate goal of Occupational Therapy is to restore maximal functional independence to each individual patient. Patients are empowered to manage their symptoms independently, to achieve their highest possible level of function, and to discharge to the most appropriate living situation.

  • In its simplest terms, occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants help people across the lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities (occupations).
  • Occupational therapy services may include comprehensive evaluations of the client's home and other environments (e.g., workplace, school), recommendations for adaptive equipment and training in its use, and guidance and education for family members and caregivers. Occupational therapy practitioners have a holistic perspective, in which the focus is on adapting the environment to fit the person, and the person is an integral part of the therapy team.
  • Occupational Therapy restores or maintains the ability to perform tasks used in daily living, often through developing ways to modify or adapt activities.
  • Our Occupational Therapists make a complete evaluation of the impact the patient's surgery or illness has had on their activities both at home and in the community. Then an individualized treatment plan is recommended and treatment is completed to improve the quality of the patient's daily living activities.
