Fluoride varnish is a sticky paste containing 5 % sodium fluoride. A small amount of varnish is painted onto the child’s teeth by a public health nurse. Fluoride varnish, like other fluoride products, helps to prevent tooth decay in a variety of ways. It is available for children 6 months to 6 years. It can be applied three to four times per year. The process is quick, easy, and painless. Child receives a new toothbrush and toothpaste with each application. There is no fee for this service.

Contact La Crosse County Public Health Nursing for more information or to schedule an appointment at (608)785-9723.
