LANDSCAPING AND YOUR PRIVATE WELL

Good communication between you and your well driller is important.  The well driller must be informed of the final grade anticipated around your well.  The well code requires the casing to terminate no less than 12 inches above grade.  Keep in mind the amount of topsoil you will be placing on your lot.

If you are using landscaping timbers around your well, the final grade established must be at least 12 inches lower than the top of your well casing.  A planter filled with soil, placed around your well casing, must not have soil or be watertight within 12 inches of the top of the well casing.

The placement of roof gutter downspouts shall be such that the downspout shall terminate at least 8 feet from your well casing.

If you have any questions on landscaping around your well or separation distances between the well and potential contamination sources, please contact the La Crosse County Health Department, Environmental Health Section at (608) 785-9771
